Dump Body

Frequently Asked Questions About Dump Body

What materials are dump bodies made from, and which one is right for my application?

Dump bodies are typically constructed from either steel or aluminum. Steel dump bodies are heavier and offer strong resistance to abrasion, making them a common choice for hauling rock, sand, and other heavy or abrasive materials. Aluminum dump bodies weigh significantly less, which allows for a higher payload capacity, and they resist corrosion well, making them a good fit for lighter aggregate or applications where reducing overall vehicle weight is a priority. Your choice should be based on the type of material you haul most often and how much payload capacity you need to maximize.

How do I know if a dump body will fit my truck's chassis?

Dump body fitment depends on your truck's cab-to-axle (CA) length, frame width, wheelbase, and the truck's GVWR rating relative to the dump body's weight capacity. Before purchasing, you will want to confirm these measurements against the manufacturer's specifications, and in many cases, a body installer or upfitter will need to verify that the hoist, subframe, and mounting points align properly with your chassis. If you are replacing an existing dump body, matching the mounting hole pattern and hoist type to your current setup can simplify the process.

What is the difference between a hydraulic scissor hoist and a telescopic hoist?

A scissor hoist uses a folding lift mechanism and is generally more compact, cost-effective, and well-suited for standard dumping angles. A telescopic hoist extends in stages to lift the body higher and steeper, which is useful for unloading sticky or heavy material that needs a more aggressive dump angle. The right choice depends on the materials you haul and how much lift height and dump angle your application requires.

What gauge or thickness of steel should I look for in a dump body floor and sides?

Floor gauge and side wall gauge vary by manufacturer and intended use, with heavier-duty bodies using thicker steel in the floor to withstand impact and abrasion from repeated loading. If you are hauling dense or sharp materials like crushed rock or demolition debris, a heavier floor gauge will hold up better over time compared to a body built for lighter, less abrasive loads. Check the manufacturer's spec sheet for the specific gauge used in the floor, sides, and tailgate before making a decision.

How do I maintain a dump body to prevent rust, wear, and hoist problems?

Routine maintenance includes rinsing off corrosive materials like salt, sand, or chemicals after each use, inspecting the floor and side walls for signs of wear or cracking, and greasing hinge points and hoist components on a regular schedule. Checking hydraulic fluid levels and hose connections on the hoist system, along with inspecting the tailgate latch and seals, will help you catch small issues before they turn into costly repairs. Keeping the paint or finish intact also plays a role in preventing rust from developing on steel bodies.
